‘I went for a consultation with Dr Marwan Al-Dawoud as I had a hip problem that was curtailing my training leading up to The World Masters Athletics Championships in Perth, Australia in October 2016. I was entered for the Women’s 65-69 200m, 400m and 800m and was worried that I would not be able to compete as my hip hurt when I tried to lift my leg which meant running was impossible. I had had 3 physiotherapy sessions which had not cured it and at the last visit my physiotherapist Ollie suggested it might be a good idea to see Dr Al-Dawoud as he had a lot of experience helping athletes.
I got an appointment quickly which was important as time couldn’t be wasted. The initial examination done by Dr Al-Dawoud was very thorough and carried out in a very nice manner; he looked at my biomechanics and asked me many questions about the injury’s history and symptoms. Then a scan was done of the affected area; the glute med. tendon so that he could see how I could be helped. He was assisted in the scanning by an expert musculoskeletal sonographer. Once he saw the problem he let me see the scan , explained what the problem was and outlined clearly the various options. At no time was I forced to make any decision; it was entirely up to me what the next step should be. I decided to have the glute med. tendon ‘needled’ to break down a calcification on it and to promote a natural healing process. This was done with minimum fuss, discomfort and much kindness from Dr Al-Dawoud and his assistant. I was told carefully how much rest to give myself and what to expect in the way of soreness over the next few days.
After a week I was able to run again with no pain and when I got to Australia for the Championships the injury had cleared up. I ran in all 3 events, made all 3 finals and in the 400m got a bronze medal with a new British and European W65 record. I was very pleased.
I can highly recommend Dr Al-Dawoud to anyone who has a sports injury.’
