What do we check for on the scan?

The scan requires no specific preparation. Thyroid ultrasound is usually the first line method for examining the thyroid gland and surrounding tissues.

The scan will evaluate the size, shape and condition of the:

• Thyroid lobes
• Isthmus

Common problems which can show on the scan are:

• Masses
• Multi-nodular goiter
• Cysts
• Enlargement

Common reasons for referral are:

• Masses or lump
• Swelling
• Over active thyroid gland
• Under active thyroid gland
• Enlargement of the thyroid gland
