Salivary Glands Ultrasound Scan

What do we check for on the scan?

The scan requires no specific preparation. Ultrasound is usually the first line method for examining for any one of the 3 pairs of major salivary glands found in the face and neck area.

The scan will evaluate the size, shape and condition of any of the following:

• Parotid gland – found just below the external auditory meatus
• Submandibular gland – found below the angle of the mandible
• Sublingual gland – found below the tongue under the jaw bone

Common problems which can show on the scan are:

• Masses
• Stones or sialolithiasis
• Enlargement

Common reasons for referral are:

• Swelling
• Pain
• Pain on eating
• Reduced jaw opening
