Pelvic Ultrasound Scan: Male / Female

A pelvic ultrasound scan is one the most effective imaging method used to examine the uterus and ovaries. It is can also be used in the management of  IVF treatment to check the development of follicles within the ovaries and the endometrial thickness prior to conception. In males, a pelvic ultrasound usually focuses on the bladder and prostate gland.

Female Pelvic

What do we check for on the scan?

The scan is usually performed trans-abdominally but occasionally trans-vaginal as it gives much clearer images; a full bladder is required for a trans-abdominal scan. You will be required to fill your bladder by drinking 1 – 2 pints of water approximately 1 hour prior to your appointment time.

The scan will evaluate the size, shape and condition of the:

• Uterus / womb
• Uterine lining of the womb / endometrium thickness
• Ovaries
• Pelvic area / adnexa

Common problems which can show on the scan are:

• Fibroids
• Polyps
• Ovarian cysts
• Polycystic ovaries
• Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Common reasons for referral are:

• General and area specific pain and tenderness

• Swelling and bloating
• Irregular periods
• Heavy menstrual bleeding
• Post-menopausal bleeding
• Pre-IVF cycles
• Pre-ovulation assessment

Male Pelvic

What do we check for on the scan?

This scan is usually performed as a renal scan as generally in males the symptoms are in association with the renal tract. If specifically prostate in origin then a specific prostate scan is advised.

The scan is performed trans-abdominally and you will be require to fill your bladder by drinking 1 – 2 pints of water approximately 1 hour prior to your appointment time.

The scan will evaluate the size, shape, outline and condition of the:

• Bladder
• Prostate

Common problems which can show on the scan are:

• Insufficient or incomplete bladder emptying
• Increased prostate size

Common reasons for referral are:

• Increase urine frequency
